Happy Thanksgiving

Have a ball on Turkey Day.

While I won’t be heading to the Turkey Testicle Festival, I will be traveling to dine with friends in Memphis and I’m so looking forward to sharing the community meal.

Southern Food Documentaries

Today was a stuck on the couch and surf the Internet day for me.

I came across the Southern Foodways Alliance website thanks to a post over at Adrenaline’s Shadow about her craving for a hot sausage sandwich from The Big Apple Inn in Jackson, Mississippi. Maybe more importantly, she didn’t order the pig ear sandwich. What she did do was link to a documentary about the restaurant called Smokes and Ears. Wonderful stuff.

Thanks to those two sites, I’m now craving barbecue because of the documentaries by Joe York at the SFA site. He shot one about the art of Whole Hog barbecuing in Lexington which is about 40 miles from my locale here in Hoots. If it hadn’t been for all the rain and flooding today, there might just have been a road trip.

These are some amazing docs. I haven’t watched them all yet, but the man is good at what he does. It’s an excellent mix of music, visuals and interviews. He even has one about Prince’s hot chicken in Nashville.

I’ll be settling in and watching all these over the next day or so. I recommend you do the same.

Where’s The Wine?

I see the perfect spot on that empty shelf for my favorite bottle of vino.

I still have trouble fathoming that in the state of Tennessee it is illegal to sell a bottle of wine in a grocery store.

How big a travesty is that?

I see it as a one-stop shopping opportunity. You know the old line “A jug of wine, a loaf of bread and thou” from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam as translated by Edward FitzGerald.

Tennessee has some of the most stringent legislation about checking IDs for alcohol purchases in the nation, so how could it be any more tough on the grocery clerk to ask for a driver’s license from someone trying to purchase a bottle of merlot than for a keg of Natural Light?

And yes, it is legal to sell and purchase not just six packs and cases but KEGS of beer at a grocery. I’m sure anyone buying a keg of such a quality beer isn’t about to abuse themselves by imbibing in too much.

So on this day dedicated to blogging about bringing wine to Tennessee’s groceries, let’s lift a toast to Red White and Food which is working against liquor lobbyists and bring that “jug of wine” to a grocery shelf near me.

And let’s adopt and adapt Julius Caesar’s famous line to aid our cause while we’re at it.

Instead of “Veni, vidi, vici,” let’s go with “Veni, vidi, vici, vino!”

Bacon Turtles

It’s been a while since I shared some bacon goodness with everyone who stops by here.

I ran across this the other day and have thought about it more than once since discovering it.

What has captivated my imagination and my salivary glands, you ask?

It’s a hamburger patty topped with cheese and wrapped in a woven bacon shell with the hot dogs stuffed in there to form the turtle appendages.

Heart attack inducing? Of course.
Tasty? My guess is yes.

Fat Tuesday

It’s been too long since I’ve been down in the Big Easy.

I think the recent Super Bowl win by the Saints has amped up my desire to make a return to NOLA.

I’m missing New Orleans. Days like today, Fat Tuesday, make me crave it even more … the food, the music, the beads, the beverages.

Speaking of beverages, I’m not Catholic, but I am giving up something for Lent this year. I’m swearing off sodas. Bye Bye Mountain Dew. See ya later Dr. Pepper. It’s been sweet, but I’m going to eliminate you.

I did this a few years ago and erased Diet Coke from my list of liquids of which I partake. As a matter of fact, it’s now been four years since I swilled a Diet Coke.

Hurricane Katrina has paid a horrible visit to New Orleans since I have. She ravaged it. I hope to make a much more gentle landing in the Crescent City.

I’d love to  feel the heavy air and smell the amazing aromas that waft out of doors and windows of restaurants of both the five-star and the tiny five-table variety.

The music pulses through the humidity moving your feet along the cobblestones and sidewalks, pulling you toward the rhythm. Brass boldly squawking at you. The felt-covered hammers inside the piano striking and making the strings vibrate to match the pumping of the blood through your veins. An accordion wheezing and breathing, yelling more than whispering, urging you to come inside. The city and its music speaks to you.

To put you even more in the spirit of New Orleans, Newscoma called upon Buckwheat Zydeco this morning.

Super Bowl Sunday

It’s Super Bowl Sunday.

Hip hip hurray! It’s a holiday in the Squirrel Queen household.

A day for the best finger foods and snacks of all time. A day for football. A day for creative advertising. A day for comradery. A day for beer!

Unlike many seasons, I’m not rooting against a team, but I will be pulling for one this year.

Peyton and the Colts already have one Super Bowl ring and a Lombardi trophy. Let Drew Brees and the rest of New Orleans celebrate tonight. It would be great to be down on Bourbon Street this evening.

Like the song says, “this aint your daddy’s Saints.”

No matter which team wins today, I’ll be OK with it.
